Rotating around axis in world axis mode is not functioning properly

I dont get it. Im completely lost. I'm trying to create a simple zoom in on a 3d basketball court I created. I want the camera to aim down as it drops in from up above and rotates on its way down then smoothly transitions up to a normal horizontal view. I set up an orbit camera rig. I have not touched any of the position or rotation attributes on the camera it self. Everything centered, including the null anchor point.  I make the camera zoom by moving the null object from -80,000 (I dont understand why the lower the number the higher I move in Y space, if that's not correct please let me know) to 540. I rotate the null on the X axis to 90 degrees to start my animation. I have it set to World Axis Mode. When I go to animate the Y axis, the null ends up rotating on the Z axis. I dont get it. I'm very close to giving up on using the camera rig all together. I though it would be easier but everything is out of wack. Please help! Id use pictures but it's not gonna help.

    Hi Adam

    1. Is there any particular reason your are using a null instead of the camera controls?

    2. IYou are “zooming in” using the nulls positiion value?

Thats not a zoom. You are just moving the camera closer to the object Hence your position is going crazy in 3D space. By moving the null position you are essentially moving the camera itself without realizing it UNLESS you have created an expression control for the cameras zoom linked to the null.

So from what I am reading it seems your camera is moving around and you don’t know it.

I would use the camera controls not the null unless you are an experienced user and can create multiple nulls or controllers that can manage zoom, pan, depth of field etc etc
