rotoscope tool not working

Every time I select anything in the layer window like every tutorial says online, it just selects the entire image and not the object I'm trying to select. I've updated and it still doesn't work. Please help. Cheers

Without any idea about your footage and other relevant details nobody can tell you why it's behaving this way. You need to do a better job of providing us with something that would allow us to help you such as screenshots and exact specs.
