Shape/Ellipse Tool assist: 'J' shaped path with perfect semicricle

I can't for the life of me figure out how to create this path that objects will be traveling along. It's a complete walk in the park in Illustrator, but a nightmare in Aftereffects.

I created a cirlce on a shape layer. The shape is Bezier Path. I cannot de-select 'closed' so that I can delete a vertex and draw my line connected to another. Why.

I ended up just drawing this as a workaround. But it's still wildly irritating something so unbelievely simple in one program with the similiar language to achieve was impossible to locate or attempt.
