Shape Layer not Maintaining Position When Converted to Pre-comp

When I try to Pre-comp a shape layer, the newly-created Pre-comp jumps to another location within my comp. How do I prevent this from happening?

I figured out that the problem was because my layer was parented to another layer. Creating Pre-comps breaks parenting. The problem was fixed by unparenting before creating the Pre-comp and then parenting again after creating the Pre-comp. I should have Pre-comped before this point in my process, but I didn't know I was going to need to pre-comp. That's just a failure in my planning I guess.

Without anby details we honestly can't tell you anything. you could be in a wrong view if it's a 3D layer, effects and group transforms could affect positioning within the layer, there could be something else. At least provide some screenshots.
