Question

Simulate Lidar look

I have drone shots that the client would like to overlay a simulated Lidar look.

I'm not sure where to even start. Maybe a "Find Edges" type filter?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Do you have any examples of what you want the shot to look like? It could be anything from Trapcide Shine to animated shape-layer strokes. If you can give us some starting point examples, we might be able to point you to an efficient workflow.

In the simplest form it's just a bunch of animated masks with strokes zapping across the environment. Otherwise this is typically achieved with depth-based compositing where you clip and intersect depth maps, either recorded with special cameras, rendered in 3D programs or generated after the fact using point clouds and 3D analysis. AE can pretty much do zero of this bar the simplest Z-depth clipping with adjustment effects. Such stuff is the domain of serious 3D compositing tools like Nuke. An yway, without even seeing a reference frame of your footage nobody can advise on what would be the best solution. Anything is possible from a simple linear wipe used creatively to more elaborate techniques as described.
