Question

Slow preview rendering

I only use premiere pro at the moment because in premiere there is something called render effects in to out which renders all the effects quickly but in after effects after I apply one effect I sit and sometimes wait for several minutes just to see what the effect does. If anyone knows a solution to this please help.

Likely just another case of expectation vs. the reality of how stuff in AE works. Its hardware acceleration is limited to begin with and depending on the features and effects used it can easily simply render in software-only mode on the CPU, with additional limitations applying in terms of multithreading and aprallel processing. Point in case: AE is not PR and expecting it to work the same is just wrong. Anything more to advise on potential improvements and changes for better performance will require exact info about your system, your settings, the project contents and so on, but suffice it to say that you still need to adjust your thinking and do away with certain preconceptions or you'll be forever frustrated about how AE works.

Let us know the system configuration and which version of After effects you're working on...also let us know the effects you're using in After Effects.

The above information will help us understand your issue in detail. However, you can try the following -

  • Go to File > Project settings > General > Video Rendering & PlayBack > Change to mercury playback engine Software only.
