Software Performance issue

I opened after effects today and was experiencing system issues I have never experienced in the past. One of which was saying I needed more than 2 frames to preview. In addition to this preview error, the software is taking incredibly long to render anything–– making editing nearly impossible. I shoot and edit mostly in HD and 4k drone footage. What can I do to improve my editing experience?

I am currently running a 2017 macOS High Sierra

                                     2.9 GHz Intel core i7

                                        16GB

I currently edit of a 2TB external HDD drive,

Would editing of an external SSD drive (500gb) increase my render speeds?

Hello,

I would recommend you check the codec you have used for drone shooting and the codec installed in your Mac or not. If not, you export the intermediate file like Cineform format and then edit it.
