Style properties not available for text object

I cannot access the style properties in text layers. It seems like it has something to do with how my AE creates projects, because it works in another project that I received from a colleague.

 

Open a new project, create a text layer and type something out. Enter this expression in 'Source Text':

text.sourceText.style

and you get this:

Property or method named 'style' in Class 'TextProperty' is missing or does not exist.

 

AE version: 23.0.0 (Build 59)

Mac OS: 12.6

Macbook Pro M1

The expression engine is a project setting.

File > Project Settings > Expressions

Check the preferences. You may have the legacy expression engine enabled.

I saw posts about dated from 2020, but it doesn't seem like it's an option in the latest release. Here's my preference panel:
