How can I resolve this issue where there are these boxes around this sun effect that I am trying to create?

That looks to me like you have a square solid with a circular mask applied.  I think you need a much larger solid with a mask applied well away from the edges.  It's a little hard to tell without seeing your whole timeline.

I made a tutorial for a Sun using Video Copilot Orb a while back and included an outer glowing solid and also used VC Saber.  It might help illustrate what I'm talking about:
