Surface Track over Puppet Pin

Hello everyone!

I am looking for a way to repurpose the puppet pin to be able to track a moving surface with it. The goal is to have a t-shirt on a background layer and an image deforming on top of it. Of course the image should be deformed in the same motion as the shirt in the background. Unfortunately I can't use external plugins like Lockdown and therefore I want to implement it with the internal tools of After Effects.

I've seen Tyler Brooks implement just that with the Puppet Pin tool, but don't know how he tracked a grid over the entire shirt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0femOsn6wUA

Any ideas? Or maybe a better solution instead of the Puppet Pin to track a moving fabric?

Thanks for your inputs!

He didn't track anything. The data was exported directly from the 3D program where the T-shirt mockup was created. That kind of is the point. Of course you can work your fingers off trying to re-create all that with lots of fiddling, but TBH, that's ultimately the point of those people selling this kind of templates - shelling out 50 bucks is more cost-effective than working on this for days.
