Switching from Editing Text to the Move tool (V)

How does everyone switch from editing text to selecting the next piece of text or object?

If I try to use the V hotkey to select the move tool, it replaces all my text with 'V'.

Cntl-V and Alt-V do not work, and Shift-V of course types a capitol V.

Another software I use allows the use of Cntl-Space to stop editing text and switch to the move tool.

I'm sure I'm just missing something obvious!
