Tapered strokes looking very steppy

I'm animating a simple stroke with some tapering and some glow - and seeing the way the stroke tapers is not smooth at all. I've tried using Saber as well, and same results. Is there a better method for creating a smooth/seamless tapered stroke?

See attached images for example - the tapered end steps down very obviously vs. a smooth taper....
