Text effects disappear when I add a background image or gradient

I downloaded an animation preset, but the minute I add a background image, the text renders fine, but the animation elements just disappear.

Newbie here, please helpe me out good people! Screenshots attached! The first image is with the background image, the second one shows the animated elements when the background is hidden.
