Question

text is typing RTL, when I need LTR. How do I change the text engine on 2026 using a mac running Tahoe? This is not occurring in any other apps.

After opening a 3rd party project, probably made where text writes right to left, I can’t get After Effects 2026 to type Left to Right. (The same thing has occurred in the Beta version) How can I get the Latin text engine back? It is NOT a setting in the character or paragraph dialogues, and I’ve tried “resetting” both of those. I’ve also attempted the switch opening a project that use to work properly to reset it. That didn’t work either. I’m on a Mac running Tahoe. I’d prefer to not trash the preferences and lose my workspaces and keyboard shortcuts. Thanks!

Just to check, when you say it is not a setting in the character or paragraph panel, does this include the hamburger menu?

    From Roland Kahlenberg:

The Character Panel's Hamburger Menu includes an option to reset its properties. If this doesn't work, go into AE's Prefs>Type and ensure the Text Engine is set to Latin. If this too doesn't work, trash AE's Prefs.

As Roland suggests, if the first option doesn’t work, you might be forced to trash your preferences.  oh just before that.. .what happens if you open a project using type set to Latin?

Yes, I reset using the hamburger menu on both the character and paragraph panels. The Prefs>Type Text Engine selection is no longer available in 2026 or 2026 beta UIs. Which is very unfortunate. I did try opening a project that was set to Latin. That did not work either. What DID work for me was to use Perplexity’s Computer AI to make the change. That worked for 2026. It did NOT work for the Beta version however. I guess I’ll trash the Beta preferences  - which doesn’t thrill me. Thanks for responding to my post!
