“When I enable Per-Character 3D on a text layer in After Effects, the text disappears. I want to apply a mask and rotate the text 90 degrees while keeping Per-Character 3D enabled. In Advanced 3D, I can extrude the text, but it disappears when I switch modes. How can I fix this, and what causes the issue?

I found an easier way to do this is to use the CC Sphere effect on your text layer; put your text layer in 3d space and keyframe a Rotation Y in effect controls. Also have your sphere in 3d space.

Extrusion only works with Advanced 3D (well technically also with C4D).  But if you precomp your text and camera, you can maintain the advanced 3D for the precomp and use a different renderer for your main comp.

And you can pickup your camera’s transform properties to link them to your main camera.  Just undock the precomp’s timelime to do so.

I want to animate 3D text rotating around an object like rings around a planet, with extrusion enabled in Advanced 3D. But if I attach the text to a mask and rotate it 90 degrees, the text turns sideways and only the edge is visible. How can I keep the text readable while it rotates?

Ah right.  I understand what you’re after now.

    • Make your Text layer 3D
    • In the Add menu on the text layer, enable Per Character 3D
    • From the same menu, add a rotation control
    • Follow the other settings in the screenshot and you should be good to go.
