Hi, I am new to Adobe AE

and am in the middle finishing my first experiance (Free Lesson) with it...

BUT...

here i am stuck for three days over texture problem...

i want to add an animated texture to a shape

this shape have a texture already applaied on it

so there is two ways i tried : which to change the Texture channel - Under the shape layer-  on the pannel to (Alpha)...here the shape itself lose it's Opacity and and only the texture appears...

the second way is to apply an effect to the texture (SET Matte) it worked on the cases where the first mithod faild...but this time non is working...

texture disapears whenever i add the Effect and the shape becoms trnsperant when i use the pannel to create Alpha Layer....

here some screen shots of the issue...

**First shot of the channel changing to Alpha Layer

**Second after adding (SET MATTE) Effect.

i want the texture to show up nicly over the shape like shot no.3

thank you in advance....

If I understand you right, what you did on screenshot 1, right side ("no opacity") was already what you wanted. But if you use the shape as mask now, you'll have to duplicate it and place it under the texture, since masks are not visible.

So you'll have the shape as visible layer, and the shape as mask layer.

Those things can easily get complex (having the same layer item as masks over and over again), therefore precompositions come in handy, as well as parenting and expressions.

In your case, a real world usage is to parent the mask to the visible shape and use expression to link the shape path to the mask shape path. By doing this, you can ensure the mask will never be off and the overlay will always fit. When animating the log, you'll need only animate one layer and don't have to take care about the mask anymore.

Thank you sir the issue is SOLVED!

but i have a question if you don't mind...

why the effect (set matte) worked in my previous cases - which are the trees on the sides- and not the logs?

is the layer type the isue? (trees are independent compositons)

From the point of logic, it should work, too.

I'm not using this effect a lot and especially not for this purpose, since it's not necassary. Could be, that you have to select "mask" or "shape" from the dropdown next to the layer selection, since shape layers may not have a "source".

Play around with the option and post back if you found out something.
