this is probably a simple question but i'm having trouble making a mask

i have a squence of hollow shapes that expand out of one enother. triangle, square, pentagon, etc.
i want it so you cannot see the next shape under the previous one.
i've been trying to use a mask to do it but its not working
please help🙏

Aside from Byron's observation, your workflow doesn't make much sense. In order to even come close to something usable, you'd have to create the shape animation in a pre-comp, then use it as a track matte on your rotating swirl.

To create a mask you must select the layer you want to mask with the same shape layer creation tool, but selecting a layer will create a mask and not a shape layer.

I only see shape layers, I don't see any masks.
