Question

Track matte not working

Me and some other class mates are having an issue where track mattes are just making the layer above completely invisable instead of revealing the defined part. If  I click the alpha matte on and off a bunch of times, at random it will function properly. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

I've create a new composition and recreated the issue using a photo and rectancle. I want the rectangle to reveal a part of the photo, but it's totally invisable.

The original post from Roland_Kahlenberg was the one that helped, but I don't see it anymore. Also Kenji_OKIRUME has the same correct and helpful information.

Thank you so much, I'm new to Ae and it's not as intuitive as Ps for me.

If AE could speak its mind, it'll probably say the same thing to you. 😉
Give yourself some time while putting in some effort and you'll enjoy yourself. AE is much more intuitive than PS - it's just much more complex.

When you enable Track Matte the layer above will always have the visibility turned off. If there is no transparency no holes will be cut in the layer with Track Matte applied. If you have a layer that will not poke a hole in the layer below it then there is no transparency on that layer. You can check it by enabling the Transparency Gird and soloing the layer you are going to use as a track matte. If the layer does not have transparency you can use the luminance values to create a matte and punch holes in the layer below.

There are no new behaviors and no reported bugs.

If you are still having problems, please post a screenshot with the modified properties of the layers giving you problems revealed. Select the two layers you use to generate the track matte, press "uu" then PrintScreen and paste or take a full screenshot and drag it to the forum so we can see what is going on. Without workflow details and a screenshot of the comp with details, it's impossible to give you any better answer than I have provided.

    Matte layer is shape layer?

So you change jpeg layer and shape layer.

Jpeg layer has to be put below shape layer.

And set alpha matte on jpeg layer.
