Track Matte: Select specific SHAPES, not just layers

Question

We all LOVE the ability to select whichever layer we like as a track matte - arguably one of the best upgrades to AE in years. So - how can we make it EVEN better? Have the ability to pickwhip a specific SHAPE in a shape layer - that way, we could have many shapes in ONE layer, each being used as a matte for different layers.

Not really a fan of the idea. This could get very confusing very quickly if you use more than one such shape layer and/ or users open projects created by others. That's a bit like with the effects compositing options or for that matter some master properties. If you forget you used them, you'll pull your hair out trying to figure out why effects behave different from how they used to. Don't get me wrong - I understand your desire to avoid clutter in simple scenarios, but this could really turn sour in other situations.
