Question

Trouble copying a path to object possition

I want to animate an object around an elipse. When I create the elipse I cannot possible get it exactly the size/shape I want in one click-drag. I have to tweak to it. The problem arrises when I then copy that path and paste it to the position of the object I want to animate: the resulting animation path is whatever the elipse was when I first created it, NOT after I tweaked it.

Please help!

Hey.  By your description it sounds like Myl was right.  You said you adjusted the scale and position of the layer so that's not the same as adjusting the acutal path which requires using the pen tool and moving the verts.

Also are you aware of the modifying keys of space bar and shift when drawing out shapes and masks to get things exactly where you need them?

You should be able to get pretty close on the initial draw.

After that select the path, use the pen tool to select individual verts and then the arrow keys to nudge the points to a more exact place if you need to.

Also the fact that you're converting the shape to bezier once it's in place makes no sense to me.

You are right though, it should be a fairly simple process.

I suggest you start with a bezier path rather than converting afterward.

I suggest using the space bar to move the shape around and get it as close as possible before

releasing rather than tweaking position and scale after the fact.

And I suggest any miniscule adjustments you need to make afterwards you use the pen tool to select verts and arrows to nudge

insteadof scale and position.

If you're still struggling i suggest you find some very, very basic tutorials about how to draw out masks and shapes and how to adjust them.

Because it sounds like you don;t really know how.

Thank you P.M.B.

What I've been using to tweak the elipse is not the layer scale/position settings, but rather the setting under "Elipse 1" (include skew and angle). I guess none of those translate over either.

The reason I've been starting with the shape and converting to bezier is because we need a perfect elipse (although I can get things pretty good drawing a path from scratch with the pen tool, I just cant get it as perfect as when starting with the elipse tool and coverting).

Without actual screenshots and info on how you are "tweaking" the shape nobody can be sure, but it seems to me that you are not tweaking the actual mask, but rather the layer itself, which of course has no effect. The relative coordinates of the mask stay the same mathematically. Other than that there could of course be a million other things at play here like the source not matching the comp, but we honestly can't know based on such rather vague descriptions.

Hello Mylenium.

I start by creating a solid layer, and then drag a circle in it to create a small round object.

I then create a shape layer, and use the elipse tool which becomes the content. I adjust position and scale to get it exactly where we need it in the frame:

This is the shape layer and the solid layer visible.

I the convert the Elipse Path to Bezier Path, select its Path, and then Copy. I paste that in the solid layers position and get this:

Can anyone help? This seems like it should be a simple thing to do yet it is completly eluding me.
