UI bug affecting the Timeline panel switches?

I encountered a serious UI bug in After Effects affecting the Timeline panel switches.

After using the new Angular tool / Bone Structure workflow (possibly related), certain layer switch controls in the Timeline panel became completely unresponsive. Specifically, the Switches area (including Shy, Solo, visibility and other switch icons) appears visually active, but clicking any switch only highlights the entire switches region with a selection outline instead of toggling the actual switch state.

The controls behave as if the Timeline panel is frozen, while the rest of After Effects continues to function normally.

What I already tried:

  • Restarting After Effects
  • Clearing cache
  • Resetting workspace
  • Renaming the composition
  • Opening different projects/compositions
  • Restarting the computer
  • Testing other Timeline layouts

Nothing resolved the issue.

This may possibly be related to running DUIK/Angular rigging tools or to a GPU/UI rendering issue. I am using an

Windows 11
NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti.

Hi Susanna, that's great news. Thanks for circling back to let us know! It happens to the best of us.

For anyone else who lands on this thread, if clicking a switch only seems to draw a selection outline around the column without toggling anything, double-check that the cursor is directly on the icon itself rather than the adjacent space. The Shy, Solo, and visibility switches each have their own narrow hit area within the Switches column.

Moving this thread from Bugs to Questions and marking this as resolved.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

Hi formosagraphics1, thank you for the thorough report.

To investigate further, could you share a few additional details?

    1. Which exact version of After Effects are you running? (Help > About After Effects)

    2. Are you able to reproduce the issue on a brand new, empty project? Create a new comp, add a solid, and try clicking the switches without ever using Angular / DUIK / Bone Structure? This will help us narrow down whether the rigging workflow is actually the trigger.

    3. Would you be able to share a short screen recording of the unresponsive behavior? A visual would really help us and the product team understand what you're seeing.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

    Thanks for your response, Nishu,

    1. AE 26.2.1 (Build 2)
    2. It is the same on a new Project with one shape and one simple rotation movement.
    3. I have attached a screen capture. It is quite off, but trust me I clicked with the cursor ON the taskbar, not above (as shown in the screen capture).

    Regards,

    Susanna

I have now also unistalled (first with keeping than with removing preferences) After Effects and reinstalled and then restarted my Computer - the same happens with a totally new project and composition.
