Unable to import PSD files with layers into After Effects 2022, this freezes the software abd eventually I need to shut After Effects down with Ctrl Alt Del .. No problems importing the same file into AFX 2021.

Without any details about the contents of the PSD and your system we can't tell you much. It could even be totally unrelated to AE but PS introducing some incompatible data. The PS forum is full with complaints about corrupted files. So by all means you have to be much more specific.
