Question

Ungodly RAM Usage While Doing Nothing

Hi all,

After Effects is using this much RAM doing nothing. I've been having a ton of 23:40 out of memory errors, so I figured I'd ask here. Those 23:40 memory errors were giving crazy high values as well (223119K memory requested or something like that).

Context: I am editing off of a project file and footage stored on an external SSD. I had finished rendering a project about 10 minutes before the screenshot. The usage was not going down. Rendering this project has caused my screen to become corrupted by weird glitchy artifacts twice, which persisted across windows. The project is just 4K ProRES 422 files with a LUT applied.

Things I've tried:

1. Media Encoder. Media Encoder has frozen halfway through about 12 times. Not usable.

2. Purge/clean media cache. Nonstop.

3. Latest drivers.

4. Many restarts.

5. Page/SWAP files Windows recommended allocations (for all drives, including external SSD), and 1.5xRAM initial, 3xRAM maximum allocations.

6. Freeing up space on PC (200 GB free on PC, 600 on external drive).

7. Moving everything on Desktop to Documents.

8. Literally running nothing else on PC.

Any help on what is causing After Effects to use this much memory would be appreciated.

Without any crash info we can't really tell you much, but no matter how you spin it, this is most likely still some driver leaking all over the place, given not only the excessive memory usage but also the CPU clearly running in circles, which typically means it's trying to initiualize some system component over and over. Anyway, start by checking your event viewer. Maybe there's something tangible and useful there that offers any clues as to what may be going on.
