Using After Effects for video editing

Im trying to edit a video that will be around 10 min of some screenshots and videos with voice-over. I have used After Effects for a while, but everyone says its better to use Premiere Pro for such a project. My question is simple, why is it better to use Premiere instead? After Effects seems to just "work", whilst Premiere Pro keeps crashing, some options arent available, and it has tons of bugs. so.. whats the difference?

    As everyone has said, yes, Premiere is the editor.  To your question as to why, the only reason you would use AE is to apply those effects or visuals to pieces of that overall clip.  If Premiere is crashing, try to find out what is causing the error.

    AE is just not an efficient way of editing and 10 minutes is a long time.

    Now, I will tell you that I am guilty of using AE myself for short clips and doing the entire edit in there even knowing not to.  So, it is a choice for sure, not encouraged but for something 30-60 seconds that has a lot of effects, well that might be the way.  That's usually the case with me.

    But, I'd never purposely use AE as an editor without effects.

      After Effects is primarily used to create motion graphics and visual effects on a shot or short sequence. It is NOT a video editing application. Premiere Pro is a video editing application that gives you good audio tools, real-time previews, and a much more efficient way to edit a movie. More than 90% of my AE comps are a single shot that I cannot process in an NLE. Something as simple as screenshots, videos, and voice over I would edit in an NLE like Premiere Pro. If you need to highlight things in a screenshot or move around on an image I would do that in After Effects, then cut that into the program in Premiere. It's a way more efficient way to work.

        The simple answer is: Premiere is a video editor and is designed to perform the tasks needed for an edit. After Effects is not.


        As far as options and bugs are concerned you'd be better off posting those questions in The Premiere forum of course, but lots of people, including myself, get plenty of work done in Premiere without it crashing a lot.
