Using imported video in a gif

Hi everyone!

 

I have a screen recording of an app I built in Adobe XD. I brought a snippet of that recording into After Effects to use in a composition, and when I try to export it as a GIF, the file size is huge. I have a GIF identical to this one without the imported video that exported at 7,3 MB, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem. All my other compositions that have imported video have the same issue.

 

Do you have any suggestions for reducing the file size? 

 

I tried creating a Premiere project, importing my AE composition and exporting as a GIF from there, but it was just as bad and some of the colors looked weird so I would rather solve it within the AE workspace.

You get what you ask for. GIF is a severely limited format and only offers 256 discrete colors at most. Of course there will be artifacts and AE is terrible at creating quality GIFs on top of it. Simply sounds like just exporting an MP4 file would make a lot more sense. If at all you can try to optimize the GIF in Photoshop or convert the video to GIF on one of those online converters, but the limitations still apply. You will always end up sacrificing something.

Hey! Thanks for the reply.

 

I actually need it in GIF format unfortunately because it's for presenting a web project. Do you think it might help at all if I do something to the original video file, like compressing it or touching the frame rate? It's a 7 second animation.
