Very Long Rendering/Encoding in Adobe Media Encoder CC 2018

Hi everyone,

I've been trying the trial version of After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder to produce a 4:30 HD music video for Youtube (H.264) with minimal effects (i.e. a picture in the background with slight wiggle effect and an audio reactor on top). I exported to AME for rendering (match source-high bitrate) and it has now been running over 8 hours, with 12 apparently to go. Is this reasonable? 24 hours for 4 and a half minutes seems rather long.

I use Windows 10 on an Acer Aspire laptop with Intel Core i5-6200U 2.40 GHz, 8 GB RAM. Right now, the CPU is at 100%, using 70% for AME. No other programs are running. My graphics card is Intel HD Graphics 520 (I'm assuming that's subpar). The computer has been optimized for music production, so I'm not concerned about the audio being the cause.

Am I doomed, or is there something I can do? Thanks!

Start by not rendering directly in AME and render an intermediate format like an uncompressed AVI directly from AE, then encode it later. The rest is too vague to realyl make sense of it, but there is an issue in the expression engine in CC 2018 that could be the cause of the problem.

If you’re using Media Encoder there are presets on the left side. You can scroll down to either social media or YouTube and find a setting which matches your video frame size (probably h264.) You can drag the pre-set on to your video onto your video in the que panel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try rendering in AE to avi, but that also would have taken 24 hours or more. I'm also saving to the desktop. Like Dave suggested, it could be that my system is not quite powerful enough. I'm really new to video editing, mostly trying it out to see if I like it enough to invest more time and money.

Would the Youtube presets typically take less time?

And surprise -- you're light on memory!  AE will perform better with 16GB RAM.  Especially since that "audio reactor" sounds like it could be render-intensive.

A machine optimized for audio doesn't imply a machine that does video flawlessly, either.

If you're rendering for YouTube you may want to use one of the YouTube Presets in Media Encoder.

Also, are you rendering to a local drive or a network? You may want to try rendering the video to your Desktop (keeping it all local) to see if you have less insane render times.
