What is AE doing with my scratch disk after RAM preview and how do I stop it?

Starting a couple months ago, AE locks up for a minute or more every time I do a RAM preview.  I noticed that the disk usage on my scratch drive is at 100% during that time, so it's doing some kind of massive disk operation every time I stop a RAM preview.

The preview works fine, it'll keep playing back forever.  But as soon as I stop the preview, the disk goes crazy and AE locks up until it settles down.  Sometimes it takes 2-3 minutes to come back to life but 60 - 90 seconds is probably the usual amount of time.

I have no computer hardware changes - my system used to work fine.  So clearly something has changed in AE to cause this problem (or maybe in a Windows update, but why would that only affect AE?).  This problem started in February, before the v18 update but it is still occurring after the update.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance,

I'm happy to say I finally solved the problem: I switched to Davinci Resolve.

1) What are your System Specs?
CPU
RAM - Total RAM and how much RAM has been set aside for AE
GPU - Type and VRAM
Number and Types of HDDs/SDs

2) How much disc cache have you set up for AE and which type of drive do you use for this cache - HDD or SD?

3) Approximately how often do you purge your AE cache?

CPU - i9 10940x (14 core)

RAM - 128 GB

GPU - RTX 2080

AE cache is 47 GB on a dedicated NVMe SSD

I have purged the cache multiple times and the problem remains

As I said in my original post, this system is the same as it has been for the past several years and I didn't have this issue until February.  I am doing exactly the same kind of work on exactly the same computer but now it is locking up after RAM previews.

Thanks,
