What is the name of this animation Effect and how to make it?

Hi everyone, 

One of my favourite graphic designers, Brad Mead, made this fantastic work. Please see the attached video.
I want to learn the name of this effect and how to make it.  

Please help me.

I was intrigued by this sort of thing to and in the end made a tutorial video showing just how simple it is.  The video is about two shapes, but in truth would work with any two layers.

Hi,

 

I just recreated that, You have to apply Set matte on layers. If you need more help, kindly let me know .
