Question

What technique is this?

Anyone know how to do the gloopy shape morphing in this video? I presume he draws the different poses as key frames and somehow interpolates the transitions. Just wondering how to approach doing something similar.

There is nothing that will automatically create those kinds of distortion transitions. The artwork looks like vector art, so you could make "morph" transitions from one pose to another using this Illustrator to After Effects workflow.

If you want to do it with distortion effects, and there are a bunch of them, then the transition between one pose and another depends entirely on the difference between the poses, and each transition will require its own set of tools and techniques.

If I were given that project with that artwork I would probably need three or four days to create the approximately 8-second loop between 6 key poses.

Thanks, I did some experimenting because I didn't like the idea of having a million layers for all the frames. Turns out Adobe Animate will import illustrator files as frames on a single layer then using the TimeLord plug-in by battle axe I could send it to Ae as a single layer. But then I discovered that animate has shape interpolation which is what I had in mind to begin with! You just draw your key frames and click the button .
