Aplogies in advance if this has been answered already. 

I looked for the answer in the forum and couldn't find one.

 

What does this icon mean?:The one looks like a baseball.

This icon tells you that the layer is an Environment Layer, used when you are working in the 3D space and the Cinema 4D or the old Raytrace render. If you are familiar with 3D programs is something similar to a HDRI.

It refers to guide layers. Check the right-click layer context menu.
