Why Do I Keep Getting a White Edge When Making Animated Gifs?

Hello,

I am making an animated gif in Photoshop. The original size is 1920 X 1080. Transparent background.

I have read that if you change the "Matte Color" to something dark or black, you will get rid of the white edge color and that is true.

However, once you change it, the edge becomes really rastered and "chunky." Is there any way to both eliminate the white edge and make the edge soft in the final render/outcome of an animated gif?

There are no real fixes. GIF is a severely limited format and it realyl only allows for a single color to be transparent and in your case this is simply eaten up by your resizing and your content having started out with very sharp edges, so after the scaling they are even more crisp and there is simply nothing that the GIF algorithm could apply dithering. A simple "fix" may be adding a tiny bit of glow and experimenting with the different dithereing methods and likewise you may be able to get a similar effect by softening the edges with a Simple Choker, but ultimately the only real solution is to rebuild it at the desired output resolution if you really want full control over transparency. Otherwise seriously consider integrating this in whatever other artwork you overlay it without even using transparency.
