Write-on/track matte problem

Hi,

I am trying to animate growing vines using the Write-on effect. I have followd this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEVAk1GaAW4  step by step, and have managed to get the vines growing perfectly BUT I have one big issue now: the vines are black and not the colour of the original layer. I can not seem to find the same luma matte as he was using on the video  - the only ones I can see are called "silhouette luma" or "stencil luma" under the modes panel. Silhouette luma makes my vines grow perfectly but the colour is still black.

How I can fix this?

Deadline is approaching and I'm desperate for help 😞

Thank you in advance!

After Effects' track mattes recently updated and have become much easier - but the real estate on the timeline doesn't give you a lot of room.

Luma Mattes are a toggle on the alpha matte checkbox

Best bit about the update is you no longer have to have the matte source layer directly above the layer and that means you can use one matte source layer for many track mattes.
