Y axis has same value while x has diffrent value

Hello,

I need help from experts to understand something. I am super confused about it.  😥


I am learning animation. Position has two value, X and Y. X control left right, Y up and down. in AE.

So the tutorial am following there the tutor positions hands of a cartoon in a way that it has same Y value (638) and different X value (733,347). (I attached the figure)


My question is if Y has same value they should be in the same line,in an up and down manner right?

But in the tutorial that doesn't happen,hands are sitting side by side, and also the teacher changed the Y position with same number.


I draw myself a graph, there I took (x,y)= (3,5), (2,5) , there I see both of them stay in same line in Y axis.

I must be thinking something wrong. What is that. If my graph makes sense then why I am seeing something different in the tutorial?

When you have problems with a tutorial, please post a link to the tutorial so we can see what is going on. 

 

The position value is indicated by the Anchor Point graphic in the comp panel. The position is also calculated from the position of the parent layer if Parenting has been applied.  If the left-hand layer is the parent of the right-hand layer, and both hands are in the same position in the comp, then the left-hand's position might be [320, 638], but the right-hand's position would show as [0, 0].  If you move the right hand to the right 200 pixels and up 100 pixels, then the position property would show as [200, -100]. If you released the parent layer, the position of the right-hand would not change, but the values would now show [520, 538]. 

 

Did that help at all?

 

Without checking the modified properties (select the layer and press 'uu') of a layer, it is pretty difficult to see what is going on with the layers. Your screenshot shows exactly what it should if the anchor points are set to the same position on both layers. There is no way to tell what is going on in the tutorial if we can't see a screenshot showing the hands in different positions when they have the same values.

I asked same question in another site (where math experts talk), they also said it depends on the 0,0.
