After Effects Memory Handling Update
Hello! The following Memory handling updates are available starting After Effects Beta v23.5x23.
Faster renders
After Effects now allocates memory more quickly, particularly when After Effects is processing intensely such as with multi-frame concurrent rendering. Memory allocations no longer wait for caches to be freed to create space. Instead, space is created asynchronously as needed. This change results in faster renders.
Minimum Cache size for core After Effects
Third Party plugins and Core After Effects share the memory limit as specified through “RAM available for” preference. In this latest build, we have reserved a small amount of memory specifically for the core After Effects functions, separate from the memory allocated for third-party plugins. This change is expected to have a positive impact on both render/playback performance and preview range, as it ensures that core After Effects functions are allocated sufficient memory to function properly, even when resource-intensive third-party plugins are being used.
Improved Low Memory Warning
The latest build has an improvement to the warning banner shown when AE encounters a low memory situation during preview. The amount of RAM After Effects is allowed to use is set by the “RAM available for” preference, but this amount is shared by all listed Adobe applications. This is not always clear so it can be confusing when “low memory” warnings are encountered during preview when multiple Adobe applications are open. To make this clearer, the updated warning banner now specifically indicates if other Adobe applications are open and recommends closing them to significantly increase AE’s share of the memory limit.
