Can't I use any other layer like a comp or mov or solid or shape layer as the source for envirement light? Right now it only supports .hdr layer.

They also added .exr support recently I think. But yea only those two that support high dynamic range values. It would be nice to have support to use a comp so you could place anything inside that comp as source for environment. It would allow you to place custom lights via solids on top of existing hdri maps.
