The easiest way to retain where things were placed is to create it as a movieclip and always keep it around, turning it invisible when you don't want it seen and visible when you do.  Otherwise you would have to have code that checks the placement info of every object before you leave it all behind and recreates it all later on.

What you should do for starters in search Google using terms like "AS2 startDrag tutorial" or "AS2 drag and drop tutorial".  Since you posted in the AS1/2 forum, I've assumed it was intentional, but you can also try searching using "AS3" instead of "AS2" in case you are open to using the newer version of Actionscript.

Thanks this was useful, but the problem after that is i then want it to remember what i moved and where and display that on another page for when they pick its habitat or name, basically at the end i want to show the user everything they chose? kinda like the example but in step by step
