Question

Adobe bridge is unresponsive and freezes on opening

Good evening,

Adobe bridge freezes with rather large amount of images in the same folder (about 200 files), but it crashes even with a few.
it also freezes on opening.
i've tried all i can find in "Troubleshoot Bridge for freezes and performance issues" on Adobe website with multiple combinations and looked for solutions on the Adobe community.

i've unistalled Norton AV, one drive, Dropbox. i dont work on lan/usb disks or NAS.

I've also tried "use software rendering".

After i clear cache/preferences (ctrl+alt+shift on startup) it seems to work for a few, then it begin to hang or work terrible slowly.

Nothing. Always the same problem.

It seems that is slow/hangs on creating thumbnails (preview quality: standard, preview size: embedded).

This with these versions:
Bridge 14.1.1.274
Camera raw 16.4

i've downgraded Camera raw to 16.0 and now it seems to work a little better (it allows me opening folders/see images), but this is not a solution, i need some advance help to solve this problem and keep my softwares up to date.

This is my PC configurazion:
HP Z2 G4 Workstation
windows 11 pro 23H2
intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
32,0 GB ram
ssd 512 + 2Tb HD
Nvidia RTX 2060 (latest drivers)

I work as photographer, all my files are nikon Z8 compressed NEF.

thanks for any help

I have exactly the same problem with Bridge. My Dell XPS is quite powerfull and very often Bridge is unresponsive or freeze on opening... I don't know what to do because I tried several time CTRL + ALT + Shift. No way...

Hi franckfouquet,

The issue vanished with further releases, but now (yesterday) with 17.0 the problem appears again.
CTRL + ALT + Shift did nthing for me too.

you have to call ADOBE and ask for old release of ACR (16.0).

Pay attention, they could ask you if you want the ARM of 32bit version, in the 32 bit version is also included the 64 bit (i had to discover it by myself)

Hi, @paolobrignone, since I'm a Mac guy, I cannot help with any OS issues or suggestions. However, I do have some questions and suggestions.

There is no need to uninstall DropBox, One Drive, etc. That will not make a difference. Using them very well might. Bridge was never designed to be used on a server, NAS, or Cloud service (DropBox, One Drive, etc.). Any use will be unpredictable and non-repeatable from day to day.

Can you transfer the files to a connected hard drive? That is, directly on your computer or to a wired external hard drive? If you can, what happens then?

Also, 200 files is not a large amount. People sometimes complain that with 2000 files Bridge is not working well, but 200 should not be an issue.

I hope that gives you some clues.

Hi Gary, thank you for your kind reply.

i know what you say, 200 is not a large number, but it is "a lot" for bridge behavior in this moment on my PC (i usually work with biggest amounts too).

i uninstalled everything that check transfers/files or create synchronized folder on cloud  because Bridge can have problems if it doesn't find a mapped unit or something is synking in background. It was just an empirical test.

i use NAS units only for backup purpose, i don't work on them directly.

As i said the only (partial) solution it's been downgrade Camera Raw to 16.0. I've got suspect that this problem is due to ARM processors support, added in this period.

Maybe the only solutions for me is waiting for further new releases.
