Adobe bridge reports it does not support DNG files

Platform: Windows 10 (version 22H2), running Adobe Bridge 2024 (14.1.5.311).

I am using the same workflow I have been using for 15 years: convert files to DNG using DNG Converter (Settings - Compatibity: Camera Raw 11.2 or later; JPG Preview: Medium Size; Embed fast load data; Don’t use lossy compression; Preserve Pixel Count; Don’t embed original), and then open in Bridge for sorting, and finally exporting.

Camera Model for source images: Nikon D3 and Nikon D300, shooting in NEF/raw-format.

What I’m seeing:

  • No thumbnails are visible on my DNG files. (Some random jpg images I have looked at seem to have a thumbnail.)
  • Sometimes I see a “Generating thumbnail” message
  • When I try to export the files to jpg, I get the error message: “unsupported format”.

Troubleshooting steps tried:

  • Restarting Bridge
  • Rebooting PC
  • Clearing cache (Tools->Cache->Clear cache)
  • Downloading the latest DNG Converter, and trying export again (still with DNG version 11.2).

This workflow worked a few days ago, so I’m at a loss what more to try. Could this be a Windows 10 issue?

Thanks for sharing your images.

Is this good news or bad?

Viewing them using Adobe Bridge works fine. Thumbnails all OK.

Both open quite correctly in Camera Raw with no issues at all.

I tried a few small edits and they both saved perfectly as RAW and as JPEG.

Now the question is why does this fail on your system?

At the moment I am at a loss but wil think about this.

One thing I must ask is, when you say things worked a few days ago, what has changed in your system since then?

Thanks for checking, it was worth a shot. I honestly have no idea what could have changed. :/

The only thing I can think of is that the computer had some “hiccups” a few days ago (i.e. between my workflow working, and now), where it didn’t want to boot correctly for an unknown reason and got stuck at the Windows loading screen, but after starting it in Safe Mode (or something similar) it was back to normal, without me really having done anything to fix the issue.

Do you by any chance have a system respore point available so that you could turn back the clock to a time when all worked?

I think my system is too far removed from yours to make a fair comparison - Windows 11, 2026 versions of all Adobe software and I don't have Photoshop Elements. That said, if you wish to share a couple of files, one RAW and your DNG conversion, I could see what my system thinks of them. You would need to use something like Dropbox and post a link here.

Thanks for the offer! I really don’t see how the DNG conversion could be the issue, since all my older DNG files, that have worked in the past, no longer works either.

Out of curiosity,  try converting a RAW to DNG directly from Camera Raw instead of using DNG Converter.  Does that make any difference at all?

Just tested this as well, no difference. I was using Camera Raw 12.0, from Photoshop Elements 2020 (version 18.0).
