Question

Ajusting CR files in Bridge then open in Photoshop

I use a Macintosh Apple M1 Pro chip with 32 GB memory.

   OS version Ventura 13.2

   Bridge version 13.0.2.636

   Photoshop version 24.2.0 release

I have extensive experience with Photoshop from way way back.   Everything has been working fine until recently a couple of weeks.

Work flow involved download files from camera (CR3) to a folder and then been opening CR3 files from Bridge so I could adjust them them and then send them the adjusted files directly to Photoshop 2023.  A couple of weeks ago I noticed some hickups with Bridge not sending the adjusted files to Photoshop 2023.   Sometimes no file would be open in PS, sometimes on or two images would open, sometimes all images would open.  I thought I had that resolved but today the issue returned.

Sometimes the all the adjustments I made to the Raw files would not even save in Bridge if I clicked DONE. Sometimes they would save.  If I tried to use the OPEN sometimes it would just go back to Bridge without opening in Photoshop.  Again sometimes open one, sometimes open none, sometimes open three or four.   I tried doing one at a time with no better success.  I have tried the three options of OPEN that available on the dropdown menu.   Strange that sometimes it would open in PS if I selected (Open a copy) sometimes not same for just plain OPEN.

I cannot seem to locate anything that is helpful even though I have tried all kind of word combinations.

Very frustrating and time comsuming.   What am I missing here?  I have no reason to download any files as they seem to work sporadically.   Every photo file I have tried has worked =EVENTUALLY so it does not appear to be the files, but rather some kind of inconsistent weird behavior.

Sincererly,

Hi @roisenp

If 1950 is your birth year, we share that.

What you're experiencing is not new, but I'm surprised that it is still showing up. It's been "fixed" several times now, but obviously, some conditions keep on bringing it back. I'm not an engineer, and I have no way of knowing how to fix it, leave alone what the conditions are to cause it.

I'm going to put forth to you two things to try, with little expectations that it will fix the problem, but who knows, maybe it will work. Then if these do not work, I'll provide a second thing to do that will help circumvent the problem until the next fix. (This has been fixed at least twice before, to my knowledge.)

Please try resetting Bridge's Preferences.

To reset Bridge's Preferences:

Quit Bridge (if running). Just before clicking on Bridge in the Dock or double-clicking the application for the Mac, press Command-Option-Shift. For PCs, press Control-Alt-Shift. Then open Bridge BUT KEEP your fingers on those keys until you see a window pop up. From the window, choose “Reset Preferences," "Entire Thumbnail Cache,” and/or "Reset Standard Workspaces.” In your case, choose "Reset Preferences."

Resetting Camera Raw’s preferences:
Hold down the Command key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw (macOS*) or hold down the Ctrl key and select Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw (Windows).
Click Yes in the dialog that asks, "Delete the Camera Raw Preferences?"
*On Mac's Ventura, it is now called "Settings.”.

Bypassing the problem

If the above steps do not work, than bypass the problem. You do not state your OS, this is written from a Mac point of view. Simply translate the actison to PC if you're on a PC.

If you take a raw file(s) from Bridge and drag it down to the Dock, those file(s) will open in ACR. At that point, if you click on "Open," it will open in PS. Do the same with any JPG or TIF files you've already run through ACR.

If you have any JPG or TIF files you've not run through ACR yet, you are stuck and have to "touch" them to ACR for this to work.

Yes, it's a nusance and a pain to have to do this, but there are times when working with computers you have to do things to get the job done as opposed to getting the job done the way it's supposed to work.

Please let us know if either of the first two options helped in any way. Thank you.

Thanks, Gary  I am finishing up some work on PS with those files I was able to send form Bridge to PS.   I have doing a work around which is a pain in the.... but at least getting something done.   I will try out your workaround and see if things go better.  I will replay to you and the community as soon as I have something to report.  God Bless.

Gary,

The lastest on this saga.  I followed up with as much as I could on the stuff you suggested I try.  Really nothing changed except that at first nothing opened up.  Then 1 image out of 5, then 3 out of five, then 0 out of five.  Tried closing both Bridge and Photoshop 24... and restarting them.   Tried turning off both apps again and Restarting the Mac but no luck.   Now repeatedly would not open even one file.  Fooled around with the setting again and got some sporadically  responses then nothing would open from Bridge though it was finally saving all the changes I made to the CR3 files at least.

Walked away from the computer for about an hour (left it running).   Came back and everything seemed to be working the way it was suppose to work.

This is just plain bizarre and I am beginning to question where the excessive activity usage (per the Activity Monitor of Apple) that Bridge seems to  require is somehow affecting things.   On that same topic, the Activity Monitor some some show little or no usage/effect when I am using heavily and sometime shows excessive activity by Bridge when I am doing not at all with Bridge.

I hope that Abobe can get his fixed permaently and soon.   Thanks for you help.  It was good to go through the steps you proviced.

God Bless,

Paul O. Rosien
