Resolved the problem.
As ever, simple when you know, but not anything I delve into until it's
necessary.
I unticked everything except the application for Adobe photoshop 2021 and
that, presumably, has cleared a clash going on within and everything works
fine.
I'm sure there will be a 'rational' explanation from the s/ware wizards,
but for flunkies like myself it needs to be pointed out in bold capital
letters.
