bridge cc 2018 accessing only external drive

Recently Bridge is recently became

quite slow in showing thumbnails when a new folder is opened. However I discovered when I disconnect my external backup which is always connected everything speeded up as it used to be. Therefore it appears for some reason Bridge has decided to ignore my internal drive.  How do I get it to look internally only as the default and let my backup simply operate in the background.
