Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss

Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Check that your thumbnails are being processed fully. The thumnail images may be appearing (because they are perhaps previously cached) but with Bridge you cannot turn off the thumbnail/preview images without also preventing the possibility to edit metadata. This is annoying as turning off the preview/thumbs would speed the editing process somewhat.

So, in preferences select "Thumbnails" and check that the file size in the field for "Do Not Process File Sizes Larger Than:" is not smaller than the images that you are having problems with.

I was finding that jpegs were not an issue but that RAW files were, this was because that some RAW files were exceeding the size I had entered to reduce the time spent waiting for Bridge to process hundreds of files.

Hope this helps save other people some time.

    Now back to being productive.

I never had this issue until today. I use a separate volume to write the Camera RAW cache files. I recently used the volume for a full clone of my drive using SuperDuper and I think a permission issue was created.

If you are saving your cache files to a drive other than your boot volume you need to be certain that the permissions not only list 'admin" users to read and write, you also need to make certain that you (User name ) appear in the list with read\write permissions on that volume. Once I changed/added my user name to the list the issue disappeared!

I really appreciate the ideas for help. I haven't done anything, and for some odd reason, everything is working fine. I'm using Snow Leopard with Adobe CS5, and things are working now. I'm baffled, but glad to finally be productive! Good luck to you all!

Your original post got to the point. It's very hard being productive and then psycho-analyzing software misbehavior. Do you know any really good Mac forums? I could use some help now and again. Apple support was a good deal but for the $ I went for more ram instead.

It's a bug, and it's been around for years. Try turning off your anti-virus, and see if it helps.

Another thing you can try is just waiting for a few minutes.

CS5 continues to have this problem? A metadata fix would have been my reason to upgrade from CS4 to CS5 !

I am not sure that metadata templates always survive the RAW > DNG > jpg process.

The "Usage" box is about ten times too small.

Is there any way to set a preference where the template shown in the lower corner of the interface is actually APPLIED

    to files?

The display of a template and the application of that template to an image file are not synonymous!

You have to apply this template in a separate, disconnected, and annoying step.  The template display vs. actual template is an unnecessary

    obstacle to workflow.

Is there a way to default this displayed setting into an applied step?

Bridge will apply templates to RAW in my experience but now it doesn't seem to apply templates to jpg's.
