Question

Bridge filename is different from windows explorer filename

I've recently had a problem where filenames in Bridge get changed and differ from filenames in Windows Explorer. I used Bridge to do a batch rename which worked successfully. But when I leave the folder and return to it in Bridge, all filenames have been changed to a few seemingly random letters and numbers. The correct filenames still appear in Windows Explorer. This doesn't seem to happen on ALL folders, only on some folders. This causes a huge problem for my workflow because I obviously need accurately named images. I viewed the metadata to see if the correct name appears there (as suggested in a related post) but filenmae in metadata is the same random letters and numbers as the filename. I've tried the following fixes: purged the cache from Bridge. Uninstalled and reinstalled Bridge. Currently using Bridge 15.0.3 and Windows 11 Pro, version 23H2

I am experiencing the same issue with Bridge which always used to work perfectly for batch renaming.  I am unsatisfied with the 'answer' which is not really a solution.  Drats.

Oops, my bad, somehow the folders containing the files I wanted to rename had become 'read only'... (weird), have reset them to normal and all is working fine. Phew

  • Screen shots show:
    • 1. correct filenames that show up in Windows Explorer
    • 2. random filenames that appear in Bridge
    • 3. Batch rename settings

Hi @Nicole5CFC ,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are unable to reproduce the issue on our end.
Could you please provide the following details to help us investigate further?

  • is that showing correct in Preview section at the bottom of Batch rename settings dialog, Please share the complete screenshot of Batch rename settings dialog
  • Please share a sample file

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Bridge Team

Thanks for your assistance. I am fairly careful to check that the preview name is correct before accepting a batch rename. Since I can't go back and show this same folder (due to the file names now appearing differently in Bridge) I did the same process on another similar folder. This folder has the length of file/folder path, and the files came from the same photographer. In this test, the new filenames I created in Bridge are accurate and match the filename as it appears in Windows Explorer, so I am not able to replicate this error either. I am attaching screenshots:

1. Test of my batch rename on a different folder (folder name starts with SE4) from the same photographer

2. Results of that batch rename in Bridge and Windows Explorer

3. One of my photos from my original batch that has the incorrect name in Bridge, but correct name in Windows

Explorer (note that when I view this image in Windows Explorer the filename is "MW2 24-25 Tchaikovsky with Anthony McGill Hi-Res _11.JPG" but when I view the same file in Bridge or when I upload the file here or view it in an adobe library the filename is "MW4BDB~1.JPG"

4. A screen shot showing the differing filenames between Bridge and Windows Explorer (the image I uploaded is from this folder)

Please post screenshots of your Batch Rename settings as well as the folders in question.
