Bridge goes into “Building criteria” mode indefinitely. How does one get out of this?

I was sorting files in Bridge, and it went into a “building criteria” mode, and has been stuck there for over an hour.  I can't access files for yesterday’s shoot.  There does not seem to be any way out of this.

I have search the Internet, and the best I can find is the comment that this is a common problem.  But no one seems to have found a solution, or even a preventative.

What is “building criteria,” and why does this state freeze all work?

    This must be a classic Adobe reply. It says answered, whereas the link provided goes to an unanswered thread where a large number of complaints are that Adobe don't care, and they don't.
