Bridge MetaData "Apply" Checkmark icon is non-functional?

If I load a batch of images into Bridge and Modify, Add or Erase metadata from the fields the Checkmark icon  "√"  at the bottom will not function. to get Bridge to make the change(s) I have to select only a limited range of images then select another, previously un-selected image. I get a message window asking me if I really want to make the changes (Duh!) after I say yes to that I can go on. What a pain.
