Question

Bridge seems to edit photos once I import them

I open up bridge to go through my images and cut down ones I don't like but as soon as I open it up, the colours are really nice on the images and then within a few seconds, one by one, the colours and brightness seems to change and the images aren't so nice. This means I'm having to edit my photos much more than I should as the first colours and brightness are perfect. Could anyone please let me know what's going on?

First of all, Bridge is not an editor. nor is there any import. It is a file browser that simply shows what is on your drive.

When you first view a RAW file, you are actually seeing the embedded JPEG that has all of your camera settings. Bridge, via the Adobe Camera RAW plugin, will then create a preview from the actual RAW data. This is the data that you use when you open a RAW file in Photoshop. Camera RAW does NOT know about the camera-specific adjustments, it can only use the default settings.

The whole reason for shooting RAW files is so that you don't have to rely on the camera settings, you can use the big screen and processing power of your computer to make adjustments and edits.

If you use your camera manufacturer's development software (for example, Canon has Digital Photo Professional), it will recognize the camera settings and should give you identical results to the JPEG preview. You can also simply shoot JPEG in the camera, but that limits the adjustments you can make on your computer.

Bottom line- this is not a bug, this is how RAW files are handled.

Lumigraphics is correct. I can think of one thing to add: if you either find or create your own Presets, you can make a global adjustment with the Preset and be done. (Or make supplemental adjustments after the Preset process.)
