Bridge thumbnail cache shared between multiple PCs

Hello experts,

I have this situation and so far I haven't found an efficient way to solve this - and I don't really know where else to search for answers.

I work for a studio where we have this setup: <10 computers running CC suite (photographers, videographers, designers). We are all on a same local network and we have a NAS server attached (some 4 HDD solution from WD). On this central server there is a photo database (around 2TB of RAWs). Everybody has the network drive mounted and can access these photos normally.

The problem is that we want to be able to search in all of these photos (based on metadata + keywords) - on any of the workstations - using Adobe Bridge CC 2017. As it is right now - the only way to do this is to come to root folder, hit show items from subfolders, let it index and generate all the thumbnails (takes a long time and takes up space) - and then you are able to search. But only on that particular workstation.

Is there a way to have a central cache, that is also placed on the same server, so we have to do this long cache generation process just once, and then everybody on any workstation can just login and use the same cache? See and search in photos with reasonable response times?

I tried this already in different ways but it didn't work. At first I thought that it's because some windows<>mac issue, but today I tried even two macs and it didn't work. This is what I tried (on a sample of 1500 pics):

  • Generate thumbnail cache on a local PC, then move the entire cache folder to the network drive. On a second computer set cache path to that same network folder, restart bridge. Didn't work - the second computer still started generating it's own thumbnails, taking a long time, same as before.
  • Then I tried clearing the cache, set the path on the network drive and then generate cache there directly. Worked fine, the local PC opens stuff fast. However the second PC after being set in the same path still started to generate it's own thumbnails. Third PC (this one is Windows) just froze Bridge every time I accessed the folder, that was supposed to be cached already.
  • I tried using Tools>Export cache to folders. Cache files were generated in all the subfolders on the server. The second PC however ignored that cache again and started generating it's own locally.
  • I tried using high quality thumbnails, also embed size. I tried compacting cache on exit. Didn't see a difference

Is there something I'm missing? Is there a better way to do this? I feel like what I'm trying to do shouldn't be impossible using Bridge, I would rather avoid using external software to do this.

Thanks for any kind of help or pointers.

You can search this site or the internet for numerous cries of lament… I believe that Bridge is intended as a stand alone file browser, not as a networked DAM solution for workgroups. It appears that although there are features to help speed up the use of the central cache by exporting, one can’t avoid using the central cache on each local computer.
