empty caption in Bridge?

As photographer I work with Lightroom and photoshop/Bridge. I always load my pictures directly to an external hard drive, process my pictures in Lightroom where I also fill in the caption. When I open them in Bridge, I also can read the caption.

Recently I had to work on my Macbook, because my iMac was send back for reparation. I've got it back now and I see that when I connect my external hard drive to my iMac and in Bridge I want to read the caption of my pictures on that hard drive, the caption is totally empty! When I plug that hard drive at the macbook again, and I use Bridge on the macbook, the caption is filled in. Does anybody now what's going wrong?

Are you using the Lightroom Catalogue Settings/Metadata/Automatically Write Changes into XMP ?

It can be beneficial to have a second opinion on the state of the metadata in the file.

Download ExifTool and install it, then run the following command line:

MAC OS:

exiftool -a -G1 -s 'path/to/file/here.jpg'

WIN OS:

exiftool -a -G1 -s "C:\path\to\file\here.jpg"

EDIT: I think that I was distracted by Lightroom, it appears that this is only an issue with Bridge and the two computers? In each case, Bridge should be looking at the embedded metadata in the file, it in theory should not matter which computer is looking at the file. Have you tried purging/regenerating the cache for the current folder? You could also use “file info” on the file in Bridge or Photoshop and double check the IPTC and or Raw Data tabs in addition to using ExifTool.

Thnx for the reply,

with your answers I realised that I had to check the XMP in the preference box, so it looks now that it's solved.

Do you have a warning on the update metadate in LR? You might need to re-import your metadata from file in LR.

This question would be better off in the Bridge General forum, so I'll move it over there.
