I "batched renamed" 500 photos and the files broke.

I batch renamed 500 photos from the memory card to a new folder via Bridge Batch Rename. Now the files are white and when I click on them, a pop-up states it can't be opened. Nothing happens when I try to change the source to bridge or photoshop. The original files disappeared. I have batch renamed files this way thousands of times. Please, how can i recover my files? Thank you.

This has been happening to me ALL THE TIME! I finally figured it out - Bridge doesn't like it when you have "." in your filename, especially towards the end (i.e. WOF_5.11.2024) - and sometimes it attempts to read whatever is after the "." in your name as an extension. So solution is to add .jpeg and in the future use "-" or "_" not "." 🙂

"Bridge doesn't like it when you have "." in your filename" .

This is not a quirk of Bridge but a consequence of Operating Systems having a set of reserved characters which are not allowed in filenames. This is necessary for the OS to function as intended. The period character separates a filename from its extension.

These reserved characters include \, /, :, *, ?, ", <, > and |.

DO NOT put the dots in the file names. Just spent an hour trying to figure out the same problem. Make sure that the new name does not have period in it.

Adding to "whataham," do not put slashes ("/") in a name. To an OS, the slash means go down one folder to a sub-folder.

Looking at the screenshots, it appears that you somehow managed to rename the files without using a filename extension.

Have you tried manually adding a filename extension back to one to see if this is fixed? You can also use Batch Rename to add the extension back to multiple files.

Another option is:

THANK YOU!! This was the winner for me. Added .jpg and the file came back.  This happened to me with Jpegs before emailing them to a client but I hope it would work for .nef etc as well. This comment saved me HOURS of work. 🤗😘

Ran to the exactly same problem. I exported my raw files to jpeg and then used the batch rename tool to give them proper names. Now I have more than 700 broken files that I cannot open. Luckily I have the original raw files but now I have to do the 2 hour eport process all over again. I wanted them to be renamed in to the same folder and the files are within my export limit just under 3mb. The jpeg files were fine before I renamed them. I tried to copy the files but the problem stays.

Delete the copied files and copy them again manually, then do a Batch Rename.

Hi Mallory,

Oh my gosh, what a dreadful event. I hope I can help you.

First off, I assume you've removed and replaced your memory card? Please verify.

Next question #2: Just to verify, did you set Batch Rename to: 1), Rename in the same folder; 2) Move to Other folder; or 3) Copy to Other folder.

Next question #3: if you click on one of the renamed files, what is the storage size of the image? That is, is the file 10k, 15mb, 5bytes, what?

Do you have any software to recover images from a memory card? I just did a quick look and did find this:

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-recover-deleted-photos-from-a-memory-card/

This covers both Mac and PC. NOTE: I HAVE NOT USED THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SO I CANNOT GUARANTEE IF THIS WILL WORK OR NOT BUT CNET IS A GENERALLY RELIABLE SOURCE.

In the future #1, never ever ever delete your images before you have made sure they have been transfered successfully first. That's why if you use the Photo Downloader app that works with Bridge the option to delete files after they have been downloaded is the dumbest, stupidest, most evil option ever devised. When you "Move" the renamed files to another folder, you are also deleting the originals. Don't do this.

In the future #2: I strongly suggest you move the files to your computer before you rename them. This is just to reduce the number of things to do down to one so it helps resolve problems if they occure (right now there are two unknowns: the moving and the renaming, which caused the problem, we do not know).

Lastly for now: what is your OS (and what version) and what version of Bridge are you using?

Let us know, good luck.
