Question

Index very slow - not working correctly

This morning, in Bridge, I tried to find an Illustrator file that I created on Friday. I used 'CMD F' and 'Document Type: Illustrator' + 'Include all Subfolders' + Include Non-indexed Files'. After 20 plus minutes it still hadn't found the file, and it was still Indexing. It later completed but the file didn't show until I toggled 'Descending order' down and up.

I have just created an InDesign file. Search for InDesign file (like above) and the file isn't showing up. 5 minutes later and I have given up. Just not fit for purpose. The 'Mac Finder' does it in a second. What am I doing wrong?

I can't wait 20 minutes every time I search for a file I have recently created.

Extra info: Doing the same on a different mac with a different SSD hard drive and it still takes 10 minutes to find a file I did yesterday 🤷‍♂

Hi, @randomtask72, I'm only offering this approach because you are on a Mac, but I have to say I've never been happy with Bridge's search capabilities. Both for reasons you mention as well as a few others.

For much longer than Bridge was ever around, I've been using a search application for the Mac called HoudahSpot (https://www.houdah.com/). It uses Apple's Searchlight, but it uses far more than Apple does. It can do Boolean searches on more metadata than I ever knew could be available, as well as do searches within a specific folder or a specific hard drive. One aspect that I wish to add is that because I have multiple external hard drives, when I searched, I wanted the results displayed separately, not just in alphabetical order of the whole lot. I asked for this and had the update within a week of asking. So, wonderful customer support.

Sadly, the Bridge team is swamped with too many things to do and is not that large. So, expecting a fix or improvement in a timely manner is not realistic. And, HoudahSpot is used computer-wide, not just in Bridge.

Good luck!

Hi Gary. Thanks for the reply. Well, here is the thing, you will notice I am still using macOS Sonoma 14.8.2. I have not updated macOS as this breaks a plugin (inddPreview.app) I have been using for years to visually display Finder InDesign icon previews in a Spotlight search (HoudahSpot uses Sportlight so won't show InDesign icon previews if I update to the latest macOS). The whole reason I thought I would give Bridge a go again is to see if Bridge is going to be useful. But honestly, waiting 20 minutes just to search for a new file is completely impractical. I have over 16,000 InDesign Files!

See link for my request for InDesign to have Finder Icon Previews.
